2017 was an amazing year in film, but 2018 is looking to be even better. Here are my most anticipated movies of 2018.
15.) Bumblebee
The Transformers franchise is one that many people, including myself, are tired of. Michael Bay is out. Travis Knight is in as director. Knight has been known for his work on animated films such as Kubo and the Two Strings, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls. I really do think he’ll bring something new to this franchise and give it a much-needed reboot. Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena are set to star. Bumblebee hits theaters December 21st.
Han Solo is one of the greatest movie characters of all time. This movie has gone through a lot of problems, from firing the original directors to having to rewrite the entire script. I’m honestly a little nervous about this film. Ron Howard will be directing this film with Alden Ehrenreich playing Solo. Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters May 25th.
13.) Tomb Raider
The Tomb Raider video games were a huge part of my childhood. Alicia Vikander is playing Lara Croft and I’m so excited to see what the Academy Award-winning actress will bring to that role. Roar Uthaug will be directing. His last movie, The Wave, is a movie that didn’t get enough praise. Will that be the case here? Tomb Raider hits theaters March 16th.
12.) Ready Player One
Steven Spielberg plus 80’s and 90’s nostalgia? Count me in! This movie is based on the novel by Ernest Cline. It has a huge cast including Tye Sheridan, Mark Rylance and Ben Mendelsohn just to name a few. Ready Player One hits theaters on March 29th.
11.) Annihilation
This is Alex Garland‘s second film, his first, Ex Machina was my number 1 film of 2015. My expectations are very high for this. Annihilation is about a biologist played by Natalie Portman who goes on a secret expedition into an environmental disaster zone. This film from the trailer looks like a visual treat. The film also stars Jennifer Jason-Leigh, Tessa Thompson and Oscar Issac. Annihilation hits theaters February 23rd.
10.) Tully
Two-time Academy Award-nominated director Jason Reitman is back directing this feature about modern-day motherhood. Tully stars Academy Award winner Charlize Theron and Mackenzie Davis. Tully hits theaters on April 20th.
9.) Ocean’s 8
Ocean’s 8 is a spin-off of Steven Soderbergh‘s Ocean’s trilogy. Directed by Gary Ross, Ocean’s 8 has an absolutely star-studded cast including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Olivia Munn, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Matt Damon and many more. Ocean’s 8 hits theaters June 8th.
8.) Mission Impossible: Fallout
Does it get any better than Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt? This is the 6th installment in the Mission Impossible franchise. Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct. Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames, and Simon Pegg all return with Henry Cavill as the film’s villain. Mission Impossible: Fallout hits theaters July 27th.
7.) Hereditary
A24 is slowly becoming one of the best independent film studios out there. Heredity made a huge splash at the Sundance Film Festival, currently sitting at a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Heredity looks like it’s going to be a horror classic. Ari Aster both wrote and directed his directorial debut. This film stars Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, and Milly Shapiro. Hereditary hits theaters June 8th.
Yes, as of right now that’s the name of the movie. The first Deadpool was a massive success making over $780 million at the box office world wide. With new director, David Leitch, on board, Ryan Reynolds returns to play everyone’s favorite fourth wall breaking smart ass. Josh Brolin will be playing what looks to be the films villain in Cable. T.J. Miller and Morena Baccarin are back as well. Untitled Deadpool Sequel hits theaters May 18th.
Avengers: Infinity War is probably the biggest movie of the year. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has reigned supreme at the box office since its inception in 2009. Since Avengers in 2012, Thanos has been teased. Now, finally, he will make his appearance and he’s here to wreck house. Anthony and Joe Russo are back directing with Winter Soldier and Civil War being arguably the best MCU movies, I’m so excited to see what they’re going to do with this movie. Almost everyone you’ve seen in a Marvel movie is in this film. Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters May 4th.
4.) Isle of Dogs
This is Wes Anderson‘s first movie since The Grand Budapest Hotel. Anderson is by far the most unique director working today. This film is an animated movie set in Japan and follows a boy’s search for his dog. Isle of Dogs has a huge cast, there’s honestly too many to name. Isle of Dogs hits theaters March 23rd.
3.) Red Sparrow
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire director Frances Lawrence and Jennifer Lawrence reunite in Red Sparrow. Jennifer Lawrence is playing a Russian “Sparrow Girl” who’s mission is to take out a CIA agent played by Joel Edgerton. I’m so intrigued by this movie, it’s a very different role for Lawrence. Could this start a new franchise? Red Sparrow hits theaters March 2nd.
2.) Wildlife
I’m a huge fan of Paul Dano as an actor. Wildlife is Paul Dano’s directorial debut. Not much is known about this movie yet other than it’s about a child dealing with his parents divorce. This film was written by Zoe Kazan, hot off the success of The Big Sick and as well Paul Dano. The child is played by Ed Oxenbould and the parents played by Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal. Wildlife doesn’t have a release date set yet but is expected in late 2018.
1.) First Man
Academy Award Winning Director Damien Chazelle is 2 films into his career. His first two, Whiplash and La La Land are on my list of my favorite movies of all time. Chazelle and Ryan Gosling are reuniting to tell the story of Neil Armstrong. This movie also stars Claire Foy, Jon Bernthal, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler and Corey Stoll. Out of all the movies I have named on this list, I expect this one to be a front-runner for next years Oscars. First Man is set to hit theaters on October 12th.
I cant wait for Solo!
