The 10 Best Movies Of the First Quarter of 2018

142296D4-0B43-4EF4-A5EC-FB8FB1671C7B.jpegHello everyone. Blue Ridge Report’s resident film critic here. The first 3 months of 2018 have been very good as far as movies go. There’s only been one so far I was a bit disappointed with, but with that being said let’s get on this list. Here are my top 10 movies for the first quarter of 2018 so far.

10.) When We First Met

When We First Met is a romantic comedy about a guy who spends a night with a girl he instantly falls in love with. Shortly after that, he finds himself in the friend zone. He spends the next three year trying to figure out how to get out. He then discovers a photo booth that is an also a time travel machine. This movie will hit you in all the feels if you’ve ever been friend zoned. When We First Met stars Adam Devine, Alexandra DaddarioRobbie Amell, and Shelley Hennig. It is a Netflix exclusive so you can watch it there.

9.) The Death of Stalin

The Death of Stalin follows the last days and succession of the former Russian Prime Minister Joesph Stalin. You’ll be laughing from start to finish. I thought it was interesting that Armando Iannucci took such a dark and serious time in history and made a comedy out of it. Steve Buscemi gives one of his best performances to date. The Death of Stalin is still in theaters.

8.) Tomb Raider

Alicia Vikander’s take on Lara Croft surpassed Angelina Jolie’s in the first 5 minutes of the film. Tomb Raider was a fun time at the theaters and I’m excited to see what next in this franchise. This movie does suffer from a weak villain and it does drag in the middle a bit. Tomb Raider is still in theaters.

7.) Annihilation

Director Alex Garland returned after his 2015 masterpiece Ex Machina to make Annihilation. Annihilation is a movie that surrounded by good performances and a good story. Sadly it doesn’t stick with you like Ex Machina did and I had forgotten most of this movie by the next day. Annihilation is out of theaters but will be on VoD and blu ray soon.

6.)  Game Night

Game Night is easily the funniest movie of the year so far. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams star in this movie about a couple who partake in game nights with their friends. Once they find themselves involved in a real-life mystery, hilarity ensues. Game Night is still in a limited amount of theaters and should be on VOD and blu ray soon.

5.) Love, Simon

Love, Simon is the story of a guy who has a normal life, good family, good friends but he has a secret. He’s gay. This movie will hit you on a number of emotional levels. Everyone has had a secret they’ve been afraid to tell someone because they’ll be afraid of how they’ll be judged. That’s how this movie got me. Nick Robinson is great in this movie. Love, Simon is still in theaters.

4.) Black Panther

Erik Killmonger! That’s all I have to say. Black Panther is yet another enjoyable Marvel movie. I have my issues with them but this one was special. Michael B. Jordan is fantastic as Killmonger. Chadwick Bosemen is T’Chila now and forever. I loved this movie honestly. Wakanda forever! It’ll be out on VOD and blu ray soon.

3.) Ready Player One

Steven Spielberg does it again with an instant classic in Ready Player One. This movie is based in Columbus, Ohio in 2045 where virtual reality has taken over the real world. Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke are great in this, as well as the other supporting character. This movie is a giant Where’s Waldo of pop culture references. It’s thoroughly entertaining from start to finish, given it’s almost two and a half hour run time, it never once drags. Ready Player One is still in theaters.

2.) Unsane

Unsane was Steven Soderbergh’s first horror movie and boy was it a treat. Unsane centers on a woman who gets tricked into checking into a mental institution and I don’t want to say anymore from there. Clare Foy is great in this! This entire movie was shot on an iPhone and while most moviegoers won’t even notice, us film nerd was quite skeptical. We were wrong. That actually adds to the suspense of the movie. Unsane is a 90-minute suspense driven thrill ride. Even after the credits roll, this movie sticks with you. Unsane is still in limited theaters.

1.) Thoroughbreds

You’ll be forgiven if you haven’t seen or even heard of this movie. It’s only been in less than 500 theaters domestically. If you’re reading this from the Blue Ridge area the closest theaters to us that got it was over 100 miles away. Did I drive over 100 miles just to see this movie? You bet I did! Thoroughbreds is an absolute blast. 2018 so far has been the year of Olivia Cooke. She is absolutely hilarious while also being very dark in this. Anya Taylor-Joy as well is fantastic. Thoroughbreds are about two girls who newly reconnected friendships leads to a murder plot of one girls step-dad. This movie has very witty dialogue and very tense moments while being comedic all at the same time. Thoroughbreds will be our on VOD and blu ray soon. Definitely, go watch it!

I still haven’t seen Isle of Dogs yet, but I’m almost positive it’d be on this list. Thank you for reading!
